Few things can come between Southerners and their Dr Pepper. We’re passionate fans, even going so far as to bake the classic sweet-spicy Southern soda into sheet cake and brownies. It’s a long-standing love affair that goes all the way back to Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas that generations have proudly nurtured since the late 1800s.

Over the last 139 years, Dr Pepper has introduced a handful of fun flavor twists on the iconic original blend, including Strawberries & Cream, Cherry, Cherry Vanilla, and Cream Soda (in addition to zero sugar, diet, and real sugar varieties). If you were one of the many who enjoyed Dr Pepper’s unique “Dirty Soda” coconut, lime, and cream collaboration with Coffee Mate, we have some exciting news.

Just in time for hot summer days at the swimming hole, the nation’s oldest major soda brand will be launching a brand-new flavor that hits shelves on May 1: Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut and Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Zero Sugar.

In addition to Dr Pepper’s already perfect formula of 23 flavors—still unknown to us soda lovers, though many have speculated—the new Creamy Coconut flavor adds tropical flair and a creamy finish. It’ll only be available for a limited time, however; intrigued fans will be able to purchase canned 12-packs and 20-oz. bottles of Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut and Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Zero Sugar from May through July at retailers nationwide. This flavor release is also a milestone for the brand: It will be the only coconut-cream-flavored dark soda on the market.

Here are some tasting notes from our Southern Living team:

  • "It brings out more of the berry notes in the Dr Pepper."

  • "I'm not a regular Dr Pepper drinker, but I'd drink that."

Decide for yourself! Pop a few in the cooler and invite some friends to the pool—we’re planning to enjoy a taste of the tropics in our own backyard this summer.

Cheers, y’all!
