Braddock swimming second at state. St. Thomas Aquinas did well, too. Plus football and soccer

Just a few hours after the Braddock girls’ cross-country team took home a runner-up finish at state, the Bulldogs’ boys swimming team secured its best finish in school history when it placed second at the Class 4A State Championship meet at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatic Center in Stuart.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore George Gonzalez, who took home two state titles. Gonzalez won the 100-yard freestyle in 45.25 seconds and later helped Braddock win the 400-yard freestyle relay along with freshman Anthony Pineiro, sophomore Dylan Ferguson and junior Marcelo Mansur at 3:05.26.

Gonzalez was also the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke to Sarasota’s Liam Heary, who took home two individual titles and helped his team secure the overall team championship.

Miami Beach’s Marcoaurelio Lopez-Casula also took home gold as he won the 50 freestyle in 20.65 seconds. Lopez-Casula placed fifth in the 100 freestyle as well.

Of Broward’s best, Fort Lauderdale High sophomore James Boardman took home the state diving title in the boys’ division with 494.70 points. Cypress Bay finished fifth overall to lead all South Florida girls’ squads at the meet. The Lightning were highlighted by Mariana Cote’s fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle.

CLASS 3A

St. Thomas Aquinas senior Samuel Collingwood capped his career with a state championship when he won the 50-yard freestyle during the Class 3A meet at the same venue.

Collingwood swam 20.69 seconds and later finished second in the 100 freestyle in 46.08 seconds.

Aquinas’ boys finished fourth overall with 143 points, but a chance at the top three took a hit when its 200 free relay team was disqualified in prelims.

On the girls’ side, Aquinas also led all South Florida teams at the meet by finishing fifth with 166 points. Julianne McCranie, a BCAA champion in her events, finished second in the 100 back (56.97 seconds) and third in the 100 fly (54.87 seconds). Raiders diver Kaitlyn Ruby also finished third.

State cross-country

Ransom Everglades junior David “Chuli” Serra took runner-up honors at the FHSAA Class 2A State Cross-Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. He covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes 27 seconds, less than two seconds behind champ Aidan Ryan, a senior from Bolles-Jacksonville.

Football

True North 28, St. Brendan 14: The Titans won the Independent League Bowl Championship at Southridge. The defense allowed no points. St. Brendan scored off a blocked punt and a kickoff return. District champions, too, True North hosts Westminster Christian on Thursday in an FHSAA Class 1M region semifinal.
