Boys basketball: Stony Point, St. Michael's win tournaments, remain undefeated

District play started locally in District 26-6A and District 24-5A Tuesday, with a rousing Battle of the Lakes highlighting the former and LASA, McCallum and Eastside taking notable wins in the latter.

Most other area districts begin play next week, which includes an intriguing Round Rock-Westwood matchup to start District 25-6A play on Dec. 15.

Team of the week: Stony Point

The Tigers went through a gauntlet to take the Jack Frost tournament title in Georgetown by defeating Rouse 59-56, Argyle High 59-43, Dripping Springs 85-34, Johnson 82-56 and Lake Travis 66-63.

They followed that with a 64-48 win over Weiss Tuesday for their sixth win since Thursday and to improve to 11-0 on the year.

Uzziah Buntyn had 21 points and Junior Goodlet added nine points in the win vs. Weiss.

Buntyn averaged 13.3 points, six assists and two steals during the tournament to garner a spot on the all-tournament team.

Josiah Moseley (see below) also had a good week.

In the first month of the season, Stony Point has defeated the other four top-five teams in the Statesman’s preseason top 10.

Honorable mention: St. Michael’s

The Crusaders are rolling with a 15-0 record up to this point.

They won the Anderson tournament last week by beating the host Trojans 63-34, Cypress Falls 55-53, Alief Elsik 77-52 and Westlake in the title game 57-53.

Tuesday, they took a road win over a good Harker Heights squad 69-66 behind Bo Ogden exploding for 30 points.

Ogden averaged 24.75 points in the tournament to earn MVP honors, with Aiden Disu providing 18 points and seven rebounds vs. Cypress Falls.

Bowie also went 5-0 in a tournament it co-hosted with Austin High with wins over Lehman 56-28, Vandegrift 59-36, LBJ 51-22, Manor 63-46 and Dallas Carter 46-34.Mason Wasserburger’s 14 points led the win vs. the Lobos, while Braeden Spinden paced the Bulldogs with 16 points vs. the Vipers, 15 points against the Jaguars, 22 points vs. the Mustangs and 24 points against Carter.

Player of the week: Josiah Moseley, senior, Stony Point

The reigning all-Central Texas player of the year has been a dominant player the last two seasons, but Moseley seems to be even better this winter.

He recorded a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds against Weiss after averaging more than 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks to earn tournament MVP honors at the Jack Frost tournament. He poured in 33 points in the championship game against Lake Travis.

Around the area: Hendrickson defeated Killeen High 69-61 in double overtime behind Chi Ukachukwu’s 26 points and Amir Thompson’s 14 points. Last week, the Hawks were second at the Heritage Hoopfest in Midlothian with both Ukachukwu and Thompson being named to the all-tournament team.

Round Rock hammered Copperas Cove 63-32 as Jason Ward compiled 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals, Leonard Moore finished with 10 points, five boards, two steals and two blocks and Sol Barnett had eight points and five rebounds.

Westwood improved to 11-3 after a 65-50 win over Glenn. Suley Shah’s 17 points and Thomas Burke’s 14 points paced the Warriors.

Westlake is currently 9-5. It was runner-up in the Anderson after taking wins over San Antonio Holmes 65-45, Fort Bend Travis 60-46 and Rockwall 55-38.Wonder Kahozi had 22 points, Gavin Paull hit for 11 points and Jack Seiders added 10 points in the win over Holmes, while Donovan Lee’s 19 points paced the win against Travis. Paull and Max Purushothaman both had 11 points against Travis.Paull’s 17 points and Purushothaman’s 16 points led the way in the win over Rockwall, while Lee sank 21 points in the loss to St. Michael’s in the championship game.Paull went off for 31 points in Tuesday’s 68-56 loss to Lake Travis.

Leander beat Lake Belton 56-37 at the Jack Frost tournament spurred by Sean Dalberg’s 21 points and six rebounds and Ryder Bradley’s 12 points and four assists. Bradley hit double figures in narrow losses to Lake Highlands, Georgetown and Waco Midway, sinking 20 points vs. Lake Highlands and 18 points against Midway. JD Wilson had 16 points and seven rebounds vs. Midway. In a 41-39 loss to Vandegrift Tuesday, Bradley finished with 19 points.

Cedar Creek went 3-1 at its own tournament, taking wins over Killeen High 80-51, Vista Ridge 58-43 and IDEA Montopolis 89-21.Against the Rangers, Robert Conrad had 19 points, seven steals and three assists, Micah McDonald tallied 13 points and Kenji Franklin recorded 12 points 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.In the win over Montopolis, Phineas Koplin (20 points), Braydon Adams (11), Leland Washington (10) and Dillon Dubbee (10) all reached double figures in scoring.Franklin’s double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds paced the Eagles vs. Killeen High, with Conrad tallying 21 points, Koplin finishing with 16 points and Washing adding 12 points.In a 74-66 loss to Westwood, Franklin exploded for 28 points, Conrad poured in 24 points and Micah McDonald recorded nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.

San Marcos is 10-4 after an 80-35 win over Lockhart Wednesday. Zyair Jolivette poured in 29 points, Josiah Hollmon had 18 points and Cash Good added 10 points to lead the Rattlers. Sam Marcos took third in the Seguin tournament with wins over San Antonio Roosevelt, San Antonio McCollum and San Antonio Pieper. Hollmon tallied 22 in the win over Pieper, while Good is averaging more than six assists a game.

Thorndale's Kaden Kovar hit an astounding 12 3-pointers to score 36 points and had five assists to lead the Tigers to a 70-58 win over Dodd City.
