Bowling update: Former student gives mentor run for his money, plus annual awards

The 2023/2024 bowling season has ended. It has been a good season for the bowlers of Abilene. Most of you might know that I have been a youth volunteer in our city for many years.

It gives me satisfaction to see youth bowlers join the adult leagues. One such youth bowler is Hunter Donnelly. Hunter and I bowled and competed against each other in the Men’s Oil League. In this league, each individual bowls an individual from the opposing team with the winner receiving one point per game. During the second half of the season, Hunter and I stayed within two points of each other. On the last night of the season, Hunter was one point ahead of me. At the end of last night, we were tied with 61.5 points each. I am incredibly pleased when one of my youth bowlers gives the coach a run for his money. In addition to making this a great season, Hunter’s dad informed me that Hunter and his wife welcomed a new baby to the family this past week. Congratulations to the new parents.

HIGH GAMES/SERIES: Men with games of 250 or better were Dylan Huestis (280, 279, 262, 260, 257), John Nightingale (278), Nare George (269), John Lawson (269, 267, 257), Johnny Rhone (266, 256), David Morgan (266, 262), Greg Stanford (265), Chris Wilson (264), Shorty Mims/Zach Early (263), Ralph Norris/Zach Early /David Brown (258), Bill Billings (256), J.D. Shaffer/Richard Pierce/Zach Early (255), Lee Fields (254), Jalon Paul (253), Tex Underwood (252). 700 series or better were Dylan (740), Zach (727). Women with games of 200 or better were Amy Rutledge (276, 258, 236), Misty Bowden (245), Virginia Greer (232, 212) and Cathy Morton (223). 600 series or better Amy Rutledge (674, 640, 613) and Cathy Morton (612),

YOUTH BOWLING HIGHLIGHTS: On April 29th, bowling in the PrimeTime youth league, Marshal Bruton bowled games of 243, 231 and 247 for a series total of 721, his highest series to date.

On April 6th, The Greater Abilene TX USBC held its annual/awards meeting. Bill Billings was elected to the Hall of Fame, and Tom Morey was elected as a life member. Angela Lindsey received the Merit award. The bowlers of the year were Richard Lewis and Ashley Parson.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF: Abilene and the bowling community lost two members of our family. Pat Ball departed this world on May 7th and Johnny Breeden on May 13. Keep their families in your prayers and may they Rest in Peace.
