Boston Celtics Are Reportedly Trading Tristan Thompson

After just one season in Boston, the Celtics are reportedly trading veteran forward/center Tristan Thompson.

In a reported deal with the Hawks, new president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and the Celtics front office are sending the 11th year big man to Atlanta in exchange for Kris Dunn, and a 2023 second-round pick.

Boston will also be sending eighth-year forward Bruno Fernando as part of the deal, per ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Through his first and only season with the Celtics in 2020-21, Thompson 7.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game — slightly less than the 9.4 ppg and 8.7 rpg he averaged through nine seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dunn is a risky pickup for the Celtics. In his first and only season with the Hawks in 2020-21, Dunn saw time in just four contests while he dealt with a nagging ankle injury. Through those four games, the fifth-year guard averaged just 1.3 points through 11.3 minutes per game.

That being said, Dunn has shown potential as a productive player. During his sophomore season with the Chicago Bulls in 2017-18, the former No. 5 overall pick averaged a career-high 13.4 ppg.

For the Celtics, Dunn will help fill a void at the guard position left by Kemba Walker, who was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier this offseason. Thompson will serve as a solid backup center option behind Clint Capela as the Hawks look to make another deep playoff run in 2021-22.
