From Bogue Chitto to Terry, here are eight Mississippi girls basketball teams trending upward

As the Mississippi high school basketball season has two weeks remaining in the regular season, and teams are inching toward the playoffs, here are girls programs that have made a leap in success from last season.

Here are eight girls basketball teams that have made big improvement from last year.

Note: Schools are listed in alphabetical order.

Bogue Chitto

2022-23 record: 14-10 | 2023-24 record: 22-0

There's no better way to turn around a season than not losing a game. Not only turning around a season but flipping a 14-win season and getting knocked out of the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs in the second round. Coach Robby Walters' team, led by De'Mya Porter, will aim for its first title since 2016.

Calhoun City

2022-23 record: 13-10 | 2023-24 record: 16-0

In an already competitive MHSAA Class 2A field, Calhoun City has produced a perfect season. The Lady Wildcats were a second-round exit last season and will aim to make a run in this year's Class 2A playoffs with their new and improved team.

Canton

2022-23 record: 14-15 | 2023-24 record: 19-3

Coach Melissa Word's team has been led by forward Shamira Morton, averaging 19.6 points and 14.3 rebounds, and guard Na'Miya Davis, averaging 10.7 points, to give the Lady Tigers a shot at the MHSAA Class 5A state championship game, which they haven't won since 2013.

Harrison Central

2022-23 record: 19-14 | 2023-24 record: 19-3

With a win over D'Iberville, Harrison Central now has as many wins from last season with two weeks remaining in the regular season and the MHSAA Class 7A playoffs ahead. The Red Rebels, led by Mississippi State commit Anaisha Carriere, will look to make a deep run in this year's postseason after a turnaround year.

Hernando

2022-23 record: 4-17 | 2023-24 record: 14-5

One of the better turnaround seasons in girls' basketball in the state, Hernando has produced a complete 180 switch led by their star sophomore guard Fran Kelly. The Lady Tigers, in a competitive MHSAA Class 7A, will aim to be a dark horse for the rest of the season and in the playoffs.

Natchez

2022-23 record: 9-14 | 2023-24 record: 17-6

Natchez has turned into one of the top teams in MHSAA Class 5A. Coach Alphaka Moore's team, led by Roniya Ellis, averaged 17.3 points, and with Caleah Kennedy averaging 10.2 points and 7.1 rebounds, the Lady Bulldogs will look to make a run in this year's postseason.

St. Martin

2022-23 record: 15-13 | 2023-24 record: 19-6

After losing 13 games and not winning a game in MHSAA Class 6A Region 3 play last season, the Lady Yellow Jackets are one of the top teams in Class 7A. Led by Kahleah Lowery, who's averaging 15.8 points, and Jamyria Robinson, will look to drown out last season's first-round exit and end their season on a positive note.

Terry

2022-23 record: 9-19 | 2023-24 record: 17-5

Terry saw a first-round exit in last year's MHSAA Class 6A state tournament and a losing season. But coach Ruth Buck's 2023-24 team has turned things around. The Lady Bulldogs are led by guard Marleya Myers, averaging 9.1 points, and center Madison Jones, with 7.5 points and 6.7 rebounds.
