Body of missing 17-year-old found two months after rogue wave capsized boat and sent four passengers overboard in Virginia

The body believed to be that of a teen who went missing when a rogue wave capsized their duck-hunting boat two months ago has been pulled from Chincoteague Bay in Virginia, authorities announced Monday.

The boating accident also left one person dead and two injured, The Virginian-Pilot reported. On Monday Virginia Marine Police recovered what appeared to be the body of 17-year-old Nathan Jenkins.

Jenkins had been missing since the boating accident sent him and three others tumbling off the 16-foot Jon boat that he and the other three were in on Jan. 22, The Virginian-Pilot reported. All four were flung into the water when the vessel capsized at about 9:30 a.m. that day, according to the Shore Daily News. The four had been duck-hunting, the Shore Daily News said.

The medical examiner will make a final identification, the Virginian-Pilot reported, citing a media release obtained from the Virginia Marine Police.

Besides Jenkins, those on the boat were two 17-year-olds, a 19-year-old and Cory Alles, 18. A passerby rescued two of them, and Alles’ body was recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The Virginia Marine Police extends its deepest sympathy to the families of the victims,” said the statement obtained by The Virginian-Pilot.
