Body of Mexican congresswoman found in grave weeks after she was abducted

A Mexican congresswoman has been found dead inside a grave nearly five weeks after she was abducted.

Anel Bueno was 38.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador shared the news Wednesday and offered his condolences to Bueno’s family.

Bueno was abducted on April 29 by armed men in the city of Ixtlahuacán, where she was promoting guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Her body was found Monday inside the grave, along with the remains of three men. Officials identified Bueno’s body on Tuesday, and her family was notified Wednesday.

Bueno, who was part of López Obrador’s Morena party, was a lawmaker from the state of Colima.

A suspect is in custody, the president said, and Gov. José Ignacio Peralta of Colima vowed that everyone involved would be located.

Earlier this week, Peralta said seven bodies found inside a car in Manzanillo had been identified to be missing Jalisco state police officers.

“We still don’t know the causes, just that there is someone in custody and there is already a statement about who was responsible,” said López Obrador.
