Every beauty editor I know has some kind of vice or quirky habit that makes them a “bad beauty editor.” Nobody is perfect! Some editors smoke cigs or still love to tan, despite what we know it does to skin. Others occasionally sleep in their makeup or cling to their favorite landfill-clogging makeup wipes. For me? It’s that I absolutely loathe moisturizing my body and my hands. Just thinking about slathering a thick cream on my arms and legs makes me shudder. Clearly, I have sensory issues.

And worst of all, my skin is dry. So, so dry. It always has been. I am diligent about keeping my face and neck plump and dewy, and I have cabinets overflowing with creams, oils, milky toners, and lotions that help nourish my parched face. But I have never been able to stick to any semblance of a body care routine, because the occlusive nature of most body creams makes me feel dirty, like all the world’s dust and grime is getting stuck to that sticky layer on the outside of my skin.

My refusal to use all body lotions is not for lack of trying, either. I have been a beauty editor for over a decade, and in that time, I have tested hundreds of the best body creams. Most of them just don’t do it for me. By the time spring and summer roll around, though, I have often been left disappointed in the state of the skin below my neck. Papery, dull, lifeless—my arms and legs can best be described by all the words you never want to hear about skin. However, in my quest for a body moisturizer that doesn’t make me want to crawl out of my flesh, I have discovered a handful of hidden gems that leave me soft and glowing—and actually excited to wear shorts and tank tops in public.
