Bobb bombs, timely hitting, hat tricks: Vote for the SJ-R's athlete of the week

Ava Bobb, Chatham Glenwood, softball

The freshman ripped the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning before freshman teammate Hope Gilmore followed with the walk-off RBI line drive in a 7-6 nonconference win over Normal U-High on Wednesday. Taryn Griffith also had a grand slam in the seventh frame. On Thursday, Bobb blasted a two-run home in the second inning and finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs in an 11-10 Central State Eight Conference win over Rochester. She churned out three home runs in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 in wins over Pekin and Plainfield North.

Taylor Brewer, Pleasant Plains, baseball

The junior pitcher hurled a complete game with five strikeouts in a 2-1 Sangamo Conference win over Williamsville on Thursday. He gave up two hits and two walks with one unearned run.

Jaci Derringer, Athens, softball

The freshman exploded with four home runs in a 17-6 nonconference win over Jacksonville on Thursday. Derringer finished 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and five runs. That also included a double. Her four home runs tied the Illinois High School Association state record for home runs in a game. According to the IHSA website, 10 other players have hit four homers in a high school game.  Teammate Preslie Buckmaster also finished 4-for-5 with a pair of homers.

Callie Gill, Auburn, girls soccer

The junior assisted both goals in a 2-1 nonconference win over Beardstown on Tuesday, including Chloe Crissey's go-ahead goal with 12 minutes, 41 seconds left in the second half. Gill delivered the team's second goal in a 3-1 win over Riverton/Buffalo Tri-City on Thursday.

Hayden Hicks, Jacksonville, baseball

The senior pitcher struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings to lead the Crimsons to a 13-8 nonconference win over rival Routt on Saturday. He gave up one run on four hits and seven walks. He helped his own cause at the plate with three hits, one RBI and one run.

Bailey Leach, Pleasant Plains, girls soccer

The sophomore cashed in a hat trick en route to a 4-1 victory over Williamsville in the Pleasant Plains Invite championship on Thursday.

Mason Marshall, Chatham Glenwood, baseball

The junior outfielder nabbed a diving catch in left field in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs to preserve a 2-1 Central State Eight Conference win over Rochester on Wednesday. He also had a hit and scored a run in the third inning.

Brooklyn Thompson, Rochester, softball

The freshman rallied the Rockets to a 4-2 Central State Eight Conference win over Sacred Heart-Griffin with two pivotal hits in crunch time on Wednesday. She drove a two-RBI single to center field to force extras in the seventh inning and cranked out the go-ahead two-RBI single to right field in the ninth for the win.
