Boat hits Fisher Island Ferry, killing 1. What to know about this exclusive transport

Nestled around some of Miami Beach’s most exclusive communities, Fisher Island is famous for being home to many of the nation’s uber-wealthy. It even houses the highest concentration of billionaires in the U.S.

Access to the island is restricted. One of the only ways to get on and off is via boat.

But on Sunday, a 30-foot boat hit the Fisher Island Ferry, leaving one man dead and another in serious condition. The deadly crash, which is the second involving the ferry since 2020, closed PortMiami for a while.

Here’s what to know about the exclusive island’s ferry.

Where can someone board the ferry?

The island’s ferry departs from Terminal Island Road along the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami to Miami Beach.

How often does the ferry come?

On weekdays, the ferry travels between the terminal and private island community every 10 minutes.

The ferry continues to depart every 10 minutes on Saturdays between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Ferries, however, operate on demand from 1 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays.

Are there restrictions on what vehicles the ferry can take?

Ferries can accommodate any car, emergency vehicle or commercial truck as long as it’s less than 24 feet long and 8 feet wide.

They can also lug cars with a trailer attached as long as they are less than 40 feet long and 8 feet wide.

Is there any other way to get onto Fisher Island?

Not really. There aren’t any roads or highways that connect the mainland with the exclusive island.

That means you’d either have to take the ferry or enter the island by yacht.
