A BMW sports sedan struck and killed a motorcyclist early Monday east of downtown Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. as the driver of a white BMW 328i was traveling at a high speed eastbound on Truman Road, said Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department.

The car collided with a black Yamaha V-Star Classic at the intersection of Truman and Indiana Avenue. The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene, Drake said. The driver of the BMW was not injured.

The crash investigation, which includes looking into possible impairment, is ongoing, she said.

So far this year, 30 people have died in 26 fatal crashes this year. That compares to 38 fatalities in 35 crashes last year.
