Blue Eye Samurai Renewed For Season 2 On Netflix

Blue Eye Samurai

Blue Eye Samurai, an animated series that debuted on Netflix last month, got off to a roaring start. The series was a surprise smash hit on Netflix, bringing in almost 3 million viewers in its first week — very respectable for a brand-new animated IP. Fans are in for good news, too: it’s coming back for a second season.

Netflix announced today that Blue Eye Samurai has been renewed for a second season, with a short video on Twitter. The video is a quick montage of powerful scenes from the series, and ends with a big, flashy, and bloody “Blue Eye Samurai 2” logo.

Blue Eye Samurai tells the story of a mixed-raced swordswoman on a quest for revenge against the only four white men in Japan. It’s packed with high-octane action, violence, and some of the best fight scenes we’ve ever seen in an animated series.

It’s a little like Invincible in that regard — very violent, but beautifully animated and with a fantastic underlying story behind it. Unlike Invincible, though, there’s no source material to adapt here, it’s totally original and made for Netflix.

The series features the voice talent of Maya Erskine, Masi Oka, Kenneth Branagh, and George Takei, among others, but also has a sizable list of dubs in other languages. We’ve watched a few episodes of the Japanese dub, and it’s pretty great, but the English dub is very very good to begin with.

Blue Eye Samurai was co-written by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, the latter of whom previously worked on scripts for Bladerunner 2049, Logan, and Alien: Covenant. Green also took to Twitter to thank fans, sharing a picture hinting at a second season for the show.

Netflix has yet to announce a release date for season 2 of Blue Eye Samurai, but we’d expect it to be at least a year off, if not longer.
