Blockbuster: Kansas City Chiefs sign defensive tackle Chris Jones to 5-year contract

At the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory celebration at Union Station last month, Chris Jones, set to become an unrestricted free agent, vowed to continue his career in Kansas City.

“We ain’t done yet!” Jones said. “Kansas City, we will be back here next year. And for those who want Chris Jones gone, I ain’t going nowhere, baby. I’m going to be here this year, next year and the year after!”

So he is.

In a blockbuster deal, Chris Jones has agreed to a five-year contract. Jones’ agents, Katz Brothers Sports, made the announcement on social media Saturday night.

The deal includes a $95 million guarantee, making Jones the highest paid defensive lineman in NFL history and keeps one of the game’s top defensive players and team leaders in Kansas City.

Jones was integral to the Chiefs’ second straight Super Bowl victory, over the San Francisco 49ers last month, all the way down to the final Chiefs defensive snap.

Jones’ pressure on quarterback Brock Purdy on what proved to be the 49ers final offensive play, forced an incomplete pass and San Francisco was forced to settle for a short field goal to take the lead in overtime.

The Chiefs then drove for the game-winning touchdown.

A year ago, Jones looked to sign a long-term deal, but that didn’t come about. He held out of offseason activities, training camp and the Chiefs’ first game.

He signed a one-year deal with incentives and turned in another stellar season, totaling 10 1/2 sacks and making All-Pro for the second straight year and the Pro Bowl for a fifth time.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach emphasized at the NFL Combine two weeks ago that the organization’s intent was to bring back Jones as the team looks to become the first in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.

“He’s at the top of the list,” Veach said. “Love Chris, (we) tried really hard to get something done (last season) and we didn’t. When we got together right after that Detroit game, we had a great talk and both parties I think want to be here. We’ll get to work. That’s certainly a guy we want back and love. We want to see him finish his career here in Kansas City.”

Jones, 29, selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft from Mississippi State, has completed eight seasons. He has 75 1/2 career sacks and has won three Super Bowl rings.

The NFL free agency period officially begins on Wednesday and teams can begin negotiating with players on Monday. The Chiefs had made a handful moves before agreeing to terms with Jones.

Last week, the Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill for three years and $19 million. Earlier, they signed punter Matt Araiza to a one-year deal.

The Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on standout cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and can sign him to a long-term deal, trade him or let him play on the tag for $19.8 million.

Several players such as defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton, Derrick Nnadi and Mike Danna, along with offensive tackle Donovan Smith, wide receivers Richie James and Mecole Hardman, who caught the Super Bowl game-winning touchdown pass, also are free agents.
