If you recently purchased a BlendJet brand blender, it may be part of a massive recall that can result in injury. Per an announcement from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the California-based company is recalling more than 4.8 million of its BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders due to “fire and laceration hazards.”

This recall involves BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders sold in a variety of colors and designs. An estimated 4.8 million of the recalled appliances were sold in the United States, with an additional 117,000 sold in Canada. According to a notice from the CPSC, the “recalled blenders can overheat or catch fire and the blender blades can break off, posing fire and laceration hazards to consumers.”

So, how do you know if your portable blender is one of the approximately 4.8 million appliances included in this recall? Per the CPSC, the recalled blenders were sold in several different colors and designs. Consumers can locate serial numbers printed on the bottom of the base, along with “blendjet2” and “The Original Portable Blender.” Units where the first four digits of the serial number are between 5201-5542 are subject to the recall. Additionally, the recalled blenders measure approximately 9.5 inches in height and 3 inches in width, and weigh approximately 1.5 pounds.

The recalled blenders were sold at Costco, Walmart, Target, and other stores nationwide from October 2020 through November 2023. They could also be purchased online via BlendJet.com during that same time period, and retailed for $50 to $75, depending on the model.

Thus far, BlendJet has received approximately 329 reports of the blades breaking while in use, and an additional 17 reports of overheating or fires resulting in property damage claims of approximately $150,000. The firm has also received about 49 reports of minor burns, and one report of a laceration injury.

Due to this potential hazard, the CPSC notes that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled blenders and contact BlendJet for a free replacement of the BlendJet 2 base unit. To get a replacement, consumers will need to remove and cut the rubber seal from the base of their recalled blender into three or more pieces, and upload or email a photo showing the serial number on the bottom of the unit and its rubber seal in pieces to BlendJet at www.blendjet.com/safetyandrecall or safety@blendjet.com.
