With the NBA preseason just a few weeks away, the Portland Trail Blazers are adding yet another veteran guard to their backcourt.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Trail Blazers are signing point guard Quinn Cook to a non-guaranteed deal. The timing of this deal is interesting because Cook was set to work out for the Golden State Warriors this week.

Cook last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 6.1 points and 1.9 assists per game. Prior to his brief stint in Cleveland, he spent a little over a year with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The best season of Cook’s career came in 2018 when he averaged 9.5 points per game for the Golden State Warriors. Since then, his role in the NBA has dramatically declined.

Hopefully, a fresh start in Portland will allow Cook to once again become a valuable bench player for a playoff contender.

The Trail Blazers’ starting backcourt is already set since they have Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Their bench rotation, however, is a bit unclear.

Cook will most likely compete with Dennis Smith Jr. for a spot on the regular season roster. Both guard were signed just in time for training camp.
