Black Panther Party Leader Evades the FBI in Apple TV+ Caper The Big Cigar — Watch Trailer

Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton (played by Moonlight’s André Holland) is a wanted man in the upcoming caper The Big Cigar, premiering with the first two episodes Friday, May 17 on Apple TV+. New episodes will stream weekly through June 14.

A new trailer for the six-episode limited series previews Newton’s daring escape from the FBI, who viewed the thought leader as a threat and had been pursuing him for years.

Based on Joshuah Bearman’s (Argo) magazine article, the show tells the unbelievable but true story of how Newton escaped the FBI’s nationwide manhunt and made it to Cuba with help from Hollywood producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) in an “impossibly elaborate plan — involving a fake movie production  — that goes wrong every way it possibly can,” per the official logline.

Tiffany Boone (Hunters, The Chi), PJ Byrne (Gen V, Big Little Lies), Moses Ingram (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Marc Menchaca (American Rust), Rebecca Dalton (Good Witch), Olli Haaskivi (Manifest), Jordane Christie (Law & Order: Organized Crime, Why Women Kill) and Glynn Turman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) complete the ensemble.

Janine Sherman Barrois (Claws, The Kings of Napa) serves as showrunner and executive-produces alongside Jim Hecht (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), who wrote the first episode; Don Cheadle, who directed the first two episodes; Bearman; and Joshua Davis and Arthur Spector (Little America, Breaking) through their production company Epic.
