Black Butler Season 4 Release Date Announced

Black Butler season 4 Ciel Phantomhive

Back in the late 00’s and early 10’s, there was a bit of a trend of anime series finishing up just a little bit too early. We saw it with Bleach, which has since returned to finish up its Thousand Year Blood War arc, and with Hunter x Hunter, but one of the more frustrating instances was Black Butler. Now, after a decade, the series is coming back.

The official Black Butler Twitter account revealed that Black Butler season 4 will start airing on April 13, 2024. The new season is based on the Public School Arc of the manga, which is the seventh major story arc of 11. A trailer was also released for the new season, which you can watch below.

The Public School Arc sees Ciel Phantomhive, the young Aristocrat of Evil, enrolling in a prestigious public school to investigate why students have gone missing — students such as Derrick Arden, the son of the cousin of Queen Victoria. It’s one of the more beloved story arcs among fans of the manga, so it was always a bummer that the anime stopped just short of adapting it.

It’s actually not the first time it’s been adapted, although probably not in the way you’re expecting. Like many of Black Butler’s story arcs, it was adapted into a stage musical, which was performed in a Tokyo theater in March of 2021.

Season 4 of Black Butler is being produced by CloverWorks, which worked on previous seasons of the anime back when it was still just a studio within A-1 Pictures. The studio is known for its work on Persona 5: The Animation, Fairy Tail, Spy x Family (alongside Wit Studio), Bocchi the Rock, and more.

A Western release for the Black Butler season 4 has not yet been announced, but when it does eventually come, we can probably expect it to be made available on Crunchyroll. That’s because CloverWorks is owned by Aniplex, itself owned by Sony, which also owns Crunchyroll.
