Bird flu strain infects man in China in what officials believe is first human case

A strain of a rare bird flu has infected a man in China in what officials believe to be the first documented human case of the illness, according to authorities.

Chinese officials confirmed on Tuesday that the man, 41, had contracted the H10N3 strain. He was hospitalized on April 28.

“This infection is an accidental cross-species transmission,” China’s National Health Commission said. “The risk of large-scale transmission is low.”

Scientists have not said how the man got the bird flu.

The man, who is from the Jiangsu province, is now in stable condition, authorities said.

Additional cases were not discovered among others deemed to be in close contact with the man, officials said, according to Reuters.

Officials reportedly described the H10N3 strain of the illness as being less serious among birds. Authorities have not said how the man came into contact with the strain.
