Get your binoculars. Five planets will align in the night sky in June. How to see it.

Have you ever heard of a Planet Parade?

It's not a parade down Main Street. It's a planetary alignment, and coming up on June 3, you'll have a chance to see one, according to Star Walk.

There have been a lot astronomical events happening lately, whether it's the recent total solar eclipse, or the many meteor showers occurring on a frequent basis.

The Planet Parade will be the latest in that chain, and it's coming up soon, so grab your binoculars or telescope and look up.

Here's what to know about the Planet Parade.

When is the planetary alignment?

The next planetary alignment - the Planet Parade - will happen on June 3, 2024.

What is so special about it?

Star Walk states that in the early morning of June 3, six planets — Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — will align in the sky.

"In the early morning from the last week in May through June 4 you can see Saturn in the southeast, Mars in the east and the moon, all forming what appears to be a line and visible with the naked eye," Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technical Instructor and Observatory Manager Tim Brothers said. "In fact there's another planet appearing between Mars and Saturn - the planet Neptune, though you will need binoculars or a small telescope to see it."

Brothers stressed that skyward events are always seen better through a good telescope or pair of binoculars.

Here are more details from Star Walk about seeing each planet:

  • Starting late at night, Saturn, which has a yellowish tint, will be visible with the naked eye in constellation Aquarius.

  • Neptune, will be visible around the same time, but binoculars or a telescope will be needed to spot it. It will be located near Pisces.

  • Mars, with a reddish tine, will rise next. Look for it the Pisces constellation. It will be visible to the naked eye.

  • At dawn, Uranus will appear on the eastern horizon in the constellation Taurus. You will bee binoculars or a telescope.

  • Also at dawn, Jupiter will appear on the eastern horizon in the constellation Taurus. No telescope or binoculars are necessary to spot the planet.

  • Finally, Mercury will also appear in the constellation Taurus. It may be visible with the naked eye, but it may be harder due to its proximity to the sun.

During the upcoming "planet parade" coming up on June 3, sky-watchers should be able to see Jupiter with the naked eye.

Who will be able to see the Planet Parade?

Star Walk states that "the planetary alignment will be visible almost everywhere in the morning hours. However, June 3, 2024 is only a general date when it will be well-seen for most locations around the world."

Another event to look for on May 31

While not a planetary alignment, on May 31 there's another unusual site to spot in the sky.

"Early risers will find Saturn nearly on top of the moon," Brothers sais. The planet will appear only 1-degree away between 2 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. As they continue to rise that morning, it may be possible to spot both as late as 6-7 a.m. with binoculars."
