After weeks of communities across the globe coming together to watch the world’s best athletes compete, the 2024 Summer Olympics is sadly about to come to an end. But if the starry opening ceremony was any indication, we can still look forward to the Paris Games ending with a bang.
The Summer Olympics kicked off on July 26 and will officially end on August 11, with a highly anticipated closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday evening.
Ahead, we break down all the important details about the ceremony.
When is the ceremony?
The closing ceremony will take place at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 11.
What will happen during the closing ceremony?
There are several key parts to an Olympic closing ceremony, according to the International Olympic Committee. Held in the Olympic stadium after all sporting events have concluded, the ceremony will commence with the head of state of the host country (in this case, France) and the president of the IOC greeting each other. From the Presidential Box, the two will preside over the playing of the host country's national anthem, the entrance of the competing countries's flags, and the parade of competing athletes.
Other ceremonial rites that we can expect to see are the presenting of medals, the playing of the Greek national anthem (a nod to the Olympic Games from Antiquity), and the extinguishing of the Olympic flame.
Is anybody performing?
After A-list performances from Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, and Aya Nakamura for Paris's opening ceremony, all eyes have naturally fallen on this year's organizers with the hopes that they've gathered another round of musical powerhouses for the closing ceremony.
While the IOC has yet to officially confirm performers, Variety reported that Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg (a fixture at this year's Olympics), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are all expected to take the stage during Sunday's ceremony. Their sets will be a mix of live and pre-taped performances, according to the outlet. People additionally reported that H.E.R. will sing the U.S. national anthem for the handover ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
Tom Cruise may have a special role in the ceremony, too. French media has reported that the actor, who has attended some Olympic events, will execute a “death-defying stunt on the roof of the Stade de France.”
Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have also taken over social media with whispers that the two superstars may deliver a surprise performance at the closing ceremony, though these rumors are thus far unsubstantiated.
How can I watch?
You can tune into the closing ceremony by watching live on NBC or streaming live through Peacock. The ceremony will also be available to stream on NBCOlympics.com.
NBC's closing ceremony coverage will begin at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET.
