The Patriots‘ supposed quarterback competition isn’t much of a competition at all. Bill Belichick said as much to reporters on Saturday.

New England took former Alabama star Mac Jones with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, giving Cam Newton some competition in the quarterback room.

Some have speculated Jones will jump Newton on the depth chart at some point during the upcoming season. But so far, Newton has the edge – and it’s not all that close.

Belichick reaffirmed on Saturday that Newton is “our starting quarterback.” Jones, of course, still has time to change his placement on the depth chart. But Newton has done everything he needs to so far to secure his starting gig, despite “starting from scratch” at the start of training camp.

“Yeah, that’s right everyone does start from scratch,” Belichick said on Saturday, via Pro Football Talk. “Again, we all have to reestablish ourselves and that goes for a lot of other players that you could name as well that I’m sure in your mind you think they are starters, and maybe they are starters and they probably will be starters, but they all have to reestablish their positions. That’s across the board for the whole team. That doesn’t just pertain to one person or position.”

Cam Newton has almost every advantage over Mac Jones. He’s experienced and already has one year in the Patriots’ system.

Jones, meanwhile, will eventually be New England’s starting quarterback. It’s only a matter time.

For now though, Newton is leading the Patriots’ first-team offense in training camp.
