As the future of the Big 12 Conference is in doubt following the impending departure of Oklahoma and Texas, the Big Ten appears to be bracing for adding a few of the departing members.

Dylan Buckingham of KFOR in Oklahoma City reported on Saturday that the Oklahoma State Cowboys have expressed interest in joining the Big Ten. And it appears that the interest may be mutual.

For #OKState, I can report the Cowboys have been very proactive about their next move conference wise,” Buckingham tweeted yesterday. “That includes possibly the Big 10. I’m told the Big 10 has been receptive and is looking into how a partnership could work. The AAU accreditation might not be a deal breaker.”

Among Big Ten fans, the reaction has been a little bit mixed. Many are intrigued at the idea of adding Oklahoma State, along with Kansas, thanks to the huge markets those two schools would command:

Others are looking forward to seeing Oklahoma State go at it with some of their natural, regional opponents such as the Iowa Hawkeyes:

One fan hopes Oklahoma State and Ohio State will settle once and for all who deserves the moniker “OSU.”

But of course it wouldn’t be proper Big Ten banter without poking fun at Nebraska and Michigan too:

Oklahoma State may not have the drawing power of Oklahoma or Texas in football, or Kansas in basketball, but they still boast a huge fanbase with strong recruiting power and a strong history in both sports, along with several others.

Maybe they’d suffer the same fate as Nebraska and struggle in their first few years. But as they’re constituted now, they’re in a position to find success almost anywhere they go.

Would Oklahoma State be a good fit for the Big Ten?
