Will Yellowstone be canceled after season 5? Is Kevin Costner leaving the cast? Or, is Matthew McConaughey (gasp!) taking his place? Well, thank goodness, we've finally gotten some answers. 🙌

The head of Paramount Media Networks, Chris McCarthy, mentioned in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a Matthew McConaughey-led Yellowstone spinoff is indeed in the works. His confirmation said little about what the extension with the actor will look like, only that it's going to "move forward regardless of whether Costner returns to the original."

Rumors have been swirling ever since Yellowstone's mid-season break began in January, leaving devoted viewers hungry for news regarding its fate. The drama all began with reports that executives were moving to end Yellowstone in its current iteration due to conflicts over filming with the lead actor, Costner. Then, there were whispers that Matthew McConaughey was in talks with Taylor Sheridan's team about taking over for Costner and starring in a new Yellowstone spinoff.

Of course, the first part of those rumors was quickly denied—despite having a busy schedule with his Wild West docuseries and epic movie, Horizon, Costner's lawyer shut down the idea that the 68-year-old actor wasn't committed to the show.

Yet at the same time, Paramount issued a statement that didn't exactly confirm or deny the McConaughey element of the rumor. A network spokesperson told Deadline that while they had no news to report, there was always room for "franchise expansions of this incredible world" and "Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner."

Now we know they were just playing coy with that statement! McConaughey is the perfect actor to join the franchise—much like showrunner Taylor Sheridan, he hails from Texas (though farther southwest) and has a similar pride in the Cowboy identity the state imparted in him.

As for Costner, the Paramount exec simply said Yellowstone "wouldn’t be what it is today without Kevin and we hope that that stays for a long time to come."

Part two of Yellowstone season 5 is set to air this summer.
