My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3's first trailer is here taking us back to the islands with the Portokalos family.

Toula Portokalos actor Nia Vardalos returns to the franchise to direct the third instalment, as well as acting as a screenwriter on the project. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman have also returned to produce the third film, which will be released on September 8.

The third film picks up after the death of Gus, Toula's father, following the real-life passing of actor Michael Constantine in 2021.

The new trailer gives fans their first taste of the film as we see Toula reflect on everything that has happened since her own wedding, revealing her late father's last wish was for her and the family to visit his childhood village and "reconnect with [their] roots".

The whole family packs their bags for a vacation to the country, including Aristotle (Elias Kacavas) and Paris Miller (Elena Kampouris) who share an awkward encounter before even landing.

Toula attempts to track down her dad's childhood best friends, while the wider family reconnects with their Greek roots.

Aunt Theia (Andrea Martin) decided to play matchmaker between Paris and Aristotle, quizzing the former about her dreams, crediting "Greek voodoo" for guessing the pair share a spark.

Toula is touchingly branded the new "head of the family" as she desperately hunts for her father's friends alongside the rest of the Portokalos clan, with the trailer ending on a selfie of the family pulling faces at the camera.

Originally released in 2002, My Big Fat Greek Wedding tells the story of Toula, a Greek woman in Chicago, as she falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett) and brings her large family into the wedding planning process.

In 2016, a sequel followed that saw Toula and Ian take on the challenge of parenthood as they struggle to juggle connecting with teenage daughter Paris while also planning a second wedding between Toula's parents Gus and Maria (Lainie Kazan).

Speaking about the latest instalment in the franchise, Vardalos said in a statement (via Variety): "The sweet friendship which bloomed from the producers' first taking a chance on me then grew into a beautiful relationship as they entrusted me to direct this instalment of our franchise. We filmed our family reunion entirely in Greece which was thrilling for us all. Plus, we ate for free."

Producer Wilson added: "It's thrilling to have Nia Vardalos, Academy Award-nominated writer, not only in front of the camera as our star, but also behind the camera as our director, guiding our beloved cast for this third film shot on location in Greece. My Big Fat Greek Wedding has brought audiences joy for twenty-one years. I'm so happy that more joy is on the way."

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is set for release on September 8, 2023.
