Biden wins Massachusetts primary in Super Tuesday upset

Updated

In one of the biggest surprises of Super Tuesday, Joe Biden won the Democratic primary in Massachusetts, according to the Associated Press, beating Sen. Elizabeth Warren in her home state and Sen. Bernie Sanders from neighboring Vermont.

With 65 percent of the precincts reporting, Biden was ahead with 34 percent of the vote, compared to just over 27.3 percent for Sanders and 20 percent for Warren. Michael Bloomberg was trailing with 11.6 percent.

Massachusetts has 91 delegates to the Democratic convention in Milwaukee.

Biden’s rise in Massachusetts, where he trailed in the polls by double digits just a week ago, came after his resounding victory in South Carolina’s primary.

Sanders had aggressively campaigned in Massachusetts. On Saturday, he held an outdoor rally that drew 13,000 people to Boston Common.

“If we have the largest voter turnout in the history of the Massachusetts primary, we can win here in Massachusetts, we can win the Democratic nomination, we can defeat Donald Trump and we can transform this country,” Sanders said.

Asked about Sanders’s attempts to steal her home state on Tuesday, Warren projected confidence that she would win.

“I’m not worried,” Warren said. “I am happy to be part of this democratic process.”
