Biden orders release of Trump White House logs to Jan. 6 committee

On Wednesday, President Biden ordered the National Archives to turn over former President Trump’s White House visitors logs to the Congressional committee probing the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Rejecting Trump’s claim of executive privilege, Biden authorized the release of logs showing everyone who entered the White House on the day of the insurrection within the next 15 days.

In a letter to the archives, White House counsel Dana Remus said it is “not in the best interest of the United States” to keep the logs private as Trump requested.

She also noted that as a matter of policy, the Biden administration “voluntarily discloses such visitor logs on a monthly basis,” as did the Obama administration, and that the majority of the entries over which Trump asserted the claim would be publicly released under the current policy.

Archivist David Ferriero told Trump in a letter that the logs would be handed over to the panel on Mar. 3 unless a court order blocks its release.

The Presidential Records Act mandates that records made by a sitting president and his staff be preserved in the National Archives, and an outgoing president is responsible for turning over documents to the agency when leaving office.

The twice-impeached president tried but failed to withhold White House documents from the House committee in a dispute decided by the Supreme Court. The top court, which is dominated by conservatives including three Trump appointees, ruled that Biden as the current president has the right to decide on Trump’s claims.

Biden has already waived executive privilege for much other information requested by the committee, which is going through the material and obtaining documents and testimony from witnesses, including some uncooperative ones.

The Jan. 6 panel, which is led by Democrats but includes two Republican critics of Trump, is investigating the former president’s actions on that fateful day as an army of his extremist supporters overwhelmed police and marauded unchecked through the citadel of American democracy.

Investigators are also interested in the organization and financing of a Washington rally the morning of the violent attack against the Capitol, when Trump told supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn the results of Biden’s election win and keep him in power.

House launches special committee to probe Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol

Meanwhile, White House call logs obtained so far by the House committee do not list calls made by Trump as he watched the violence unfold on television on Jan. 6, nor do they list calls made directly to the president.

Trump insists he and his allies were fighting to expose voter fraud which he falsely claims cost him the election.
