Biden enjoys 61% approval rating for work on pandemic and economy

President Biden has already done something ex-President Trump failed to do in four years: Get most Americans to approve of the job he’s doing.

Just two weeks into his term, Biden is winning the support of 61% of Americans in a new Associated Press poll.

He has the backing of almost all Democrats but also a healthy 57% of independents. Even 23% of Republicans say Biden is off to a decent start.

Biden has won the confidence of Americans in his ability to tame the COVID-19 pandemic, with 75% of those surveyed saying they have some or a lot of confidence in his plan. About two-thirds say the same thing about the new president’s ability to handle the economy and jobs.

It’s not surprising that Biden is enjoying a honeymoon in the polls.

Most incoming presidents start out with at least a decent bump in approval ratings as Americans from across the political spectrum give them a chance to make an impact.

Trump was a notable exception to that rule. With a divisive style that intentionally drove away huge swaths of the electorate, the ex-president never won even a 50% approval rating In four years in the White House.
