Biden attends unity prayer service as he prepares for inauguration

President-elect Joe Biden attended a unity prayer service Wednesday morning as he sought to signal reconciliation with Republicans after the bitter partisan divisions of President Trump’s rule.

Biden sat in the left front pew at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington D.C. joined by soon-to-be First Lady Jill Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat in places of honor, with participants spaced out to respect social distancing.

Republican congressional leaders Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Cal.) also attended the service just hours before Biden and Harris take their oaths of office at the noontime inauguration.

Even that nod to traditional inauguration Day civility marks a dramatic shift after four years of intense partisan warfare stoked by Trump.

Biden is only the second Roman Catholic president after John F. Kennedy, who was elected six decades earlier.

He wears his faith on his sleeve and regularly attends church in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

The Bidens have not yet announced if they will pick a single Catholic church to attend each Sunday or if they will perhaps rotate among several in Washington D.C.

After delivering an inaugural speech that will also focus on unity, Biden will get right to work by signing several executive orders addressing immigration, climate change and the coronavirus pandemic
