Bicyclist killed by a hit and run driver in Pembroke Pines

A 41-year-old man is dead after police say a driver crashed into his bicycle and then drove away without helping the man or calling for aid.

According to Pembroke Pines police, the cyclist was hit by a motorist at the intersection of Pembroke Road and Island Drive around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was on his bike and pedaling west on Pembroke Road to meet a group of other bicyclists for an organized ride.

“As he was cycling on Pembroke Road, he was struck and killed by a hit and run vehicle. The driver left the scene without rendering aid to the bicyclist, or notifying law enforcement,” Pembroke Pines police said in a report posted to social media.

Local media, including WPLG and NBC6, said police identified the cyclist as Roy Miralda but Pembroke Pines police have not responded to an inquiry from the Miami Herald about the incident.

Traffic crash investigators said the car sustained extensive front-end damage but did not release any details about the make or model or about the driver as of Saturday afternoon.

After closing all lanes to traffic shortly after the crash police reopened the lanes to traffic after 1:30 p.m.

Pembroke Pines police are asking the public for information regarding the hit and run crash that can be called in to 954-431-2200 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS, or email tips@ppines.com.
