Britain's Got Talent spoilers follow.

There was a surprise on Britain’s Got Talent, with a former finalist being revealed as the voice behind Noodle.

Tonight's (June 1) episode saw the fourth and final semi-final take place, with the remaining eight contestants fighting it out for the last two spots in the final.

The first act to perform was Noodle, the animated cat with a wide vocal range, with the character performing a powerful rendition of Wings' 'Live and Let Die'.

Halfway through the performance, the doors at the back of the stage opened, with the voice behind the cat making their identity known.

After the judges scrambled to put a name on the familiar face, it was revealed to be Tom Ball, who finished in third place during last year's final.

Hosts Ant and Dec, along with the four judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli – said they had no idea about the surprise reveal, with the judges commending him on his performance.

"I swear to God – I never knew who the voice behind the cat was," said Simon. "If you're going to come back and win the show, you just come back as a cat. But I've got to hand it to you, you have never sung better than that."

"I am so happy right now, what a lovely surprise," added Alesha. "You've had a complete makeover and a transformation. You made such an impression on us last year so this was a lovely surprise – you sounded phenomenal."

The hosts and judges weren't the only ones left surprised by the reveal, with viewers taking to social media to express their joy at the unveiling.

"Brilliant performance and such an unexpected reveal! Ain't it just a coincidence that he's singing the song on the 50th anniversary of its release on this Exact Day?! How extraordinary," wrote one user on Twitter, with another adding: "Omg noodle is Tom Ball.... He sounds and looks AMAZING!!"

Britain's Got Talent airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
