Better not bite, better not whine: Santa Paws is coming to town

It’s not too late to get your favorite pet groomed and primed for the much anticipated “Santa Paws Photos” sponsored by Amarillo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and held at Pet Supplies Plus at 5807 SW 45th. Times will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9 and 10.

No appointment is necessary; charges will be $10 for a 5x7 print or $10 to take your own photo with a cell phone or camera.

Money made from the event will go toward upkeep and supplies for the ASPCA Kennel at 110901 S. Coulter. Costs of upkeep have rocketed for everyone, including pet care, cleaning products, utilities and insurance, so any contributions will be appreciated. The shelter is a No-Kill shelter and houses around 70 dogs and 35 cats at one time. All animals are spayed or neutered and given vaccinations and needed medical treatment to keep them healthy and adoptable. Amarillo SPCA is not affiliated with the national ASPCA and all money stays in our community. Amarillo SPCA has had a shelter in existence for the longest period of any nonprofit pet group.

Through the years, Santa Paws helpers have taken photos of hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs and cats throughout the Panhandle area. But canines and felines aren’t the only subjects. ASPCA board member and volunteer, Mary Ramirez said that they have posed pigs, goats, snakes, ferrets, birds and even a horse, but the crew gladly went outside to take the photo for the participants. “We’re happy to accommodate the owners as much as possible,” said Ramirez.

The group has seen as many as 30 participants at an event and have had Santa Paws at many locations throughout the city. “It can get a little raucous, but it’s always fun,” said President of ASPCA Lynn May. “We certainly hope to have a good year so our shelter animals will also have a good year and get adopted.”

Pet Supplies Plus has generously donated an area with a decorated scene at the back of the store, near the bathing station, for the photo area.
