Figuring out where to buy tiles is a huge step in the design process. From a kitchen backsplash to eye-catching floors, the right tile backdrop can instantly make a difference in a space. “One of my biggest pet peeves is when tile is an afterthought,” ELLE DECOR A-List designer Luis Fernandez tells us. “I like to conceptualize the entire room and all of its surfaces so that the materials are intentional and cohesive.”

So how to begin implementing the right square power into your space? First, consider where the tile will be used. “Is it going in an informal mud room bath or formal powder room?” designer Joan Enger of J. Patryce Design tells us. “Natural stone or unglazed materials are lovely, but they’re more porous, so they can stain, making them not ideal for high-traffic areas.” Enger also advices homeowners to take scale into account. “For a smaller bath, we may use an interesting pattern and splurge considering the limited quantity," she explains. “On the flip side, slabbed walls for a more dramatic effect could be the way to go for a grander space.”

Furthermore, don’t be hasty with your choice. “Unlike wallpaper, tiles serve as a lasting architectural finish,” ELLE DECOR A-List designer Ghislaine Viñas points out. “Once installed, altering tile is a big deal, so I emphasize careful consideration. You also don’t want to do something over the top if resale is the end goal.”

That said, once you have your vision, scroll on and shop our extensive guide to the best places to buy tiles online based on editor and designer expertise. You’ll have all the information to order and install tiles like a total pro.

Ann Sacks

First up is the beloved designer Ann Sacks. “I like Ann Sacks a lot,” Fernandez says. “The range of the brand’s collection is extensive, so you never run out of options.” Despite having endless choices, the site makes tile buying less overwhelming, as it breaks down the products by room, material type, and even price. Then again, if you already know that you’re a fan of a rustic, classic-meets-modern aesthetic, don’t hesitate to head straight to the company’s Studio McGee collection.

What should you consider when buying tile?

Budget

It’s no secret that you should be cognizant of the amount you’d like to spend because that will determine the type of tile you end up with. “If the budget allows, I prefer handmade tile with interesting glazes, natural stone, and unique mosaics,” Enger emphasizes.

At the same time, the DIY route or mixing highs and lows are easy ways to elevate without breaking the bank. “Balance is key,” Fernandez continues. “As an example, for a secondary bathroom, I’d use inexpensive tile in an interesting and intentional design that makes the space look like a million bucks.”

Style and Function

“I don't limit myself when it comes to tiles,” designer Adriana Hoyos mentions. We encourage you to step outside of the box, but within reason. For instance, is the tile for your bathroom? Then, pick something that can handle moisture. If it’s for the kitchen, snag a stain-resistant tile.

Once you figure out those details, let your imagination run wild with colors and patterns. “I select tile based on the project’s style, mood, and feel,” Hoyos says. “I choose a color, texture, and pattern that matches the aesthetic I want to convey. Personally, my favorite finishes are cement and adobe.”

Customization

Is your heart set on a custom piece? The beauty of this is, we’ve spotlighted several stores that can offer personalized designs. Just be mindful of the longer shipping and delivery times, and yes, you can expect them to cost more, as well.

What’s the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?

“The main difference between ceramic and porcelain is how they’re made,” Hoyos explains. “Porcelain is harder and denser than ceramic, so it’ll hold up in high-traffic areas. On the other hand, ceramic is my first choice for decorative tiles because it offers an extensive selection of colors, patterns, and textures.” In fact, ceramic is the most common tile material because it’s more affordable and durable. “I always lean toward ceramic tile, as it’s typically less fragile than porcelain,” Howell reveals.
