We asked readers where to find the best locally made soup in Whatcom County and the votes are in.
The poll had 12 local restaurant options in Whatcom County including Colophon Cafe, Brandywine Kitchen, Leaf & Ladle and Rustlers’ Front Street Grill. The unscientific poll received a total of 97 votes.
The best soup in Whatcom County
The Black Cat was voted as making the best soup in Whatcom County with 28 votes.
The Black Cat is located in Fairhaven and serves Sunday brunch, lunch, dinner, happy hour and a late-night menu.
“The Black Cat is so honored to be appreciated by so many readers for best soup. We hope to keep warming the hearts and bellies for the next 35 years,” Chevy Roberts, The Black Cat’s general manager wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.
The restaurant’s menu features dishes such as Dungeness crab mac and cheese, beef stroganoff, French dip, creme brulee and biscuits and gravy.
The Black Cat currently has three soups on its menu: tomato, French onion and seafood chowder.
“Our best selling soup is our French onion, keeping the same recipe over the years, its oven broiled with Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, crostini and green onions. Our seafood chowder is another fan favorite, offered in the fall and winter, and is the most anticipated from guests come fall,” Roberts wrote.
The local restaurant is also popular online, receiving a 4-star rating from 308 Yelp reviews.

The Black Cat is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. The Black Cat offers a late-night menu after 10 p.m. until close, and is located at 1200 Harris Ave.
Following The Black Cat with 26 votes was Colophon Cafe.
Colophon Cafe is also located in Fairhaven and serves brunch, lunch and dinner as well as cocktails and desserts.
The cafe has four varieties of soup on its menu including African peanut soup, clam chowder, Mexican corn and bean sopa and split pea soup.
The cafe is well-loved and has received a 3.5-star rating from 205 reviews on Yelp.

Colophon Cafe is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and Monday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The cafe is closed on Tuesday and is located at 1208 11th St.
