It’s hard to go wrong with a classic like the chicken sandwich.

Fried chicken has long been a Southern staple, but turning that into a sandwich?

A true moment of inspiration.

And yet, not every chicken sandwich is created equal. Some use different types of breading and seasoning. Others might skimp on the quality of chicken they use.

In that vein, lovefood.com, an online, food-focused publication, has taken on the quest to find the best chicken sandwich in South Carolina and other states. It says it has found them.

The site recently declared that the Boxcar sandwich from regional chain Boxcar Betty’s is the best chicken sandwich in South Carolina.

“Three locations in South Carolina (plus two in Chicago and one in Charlotte) serve up super crispy and tasty chicken in the form of delectable sandwiches to suit everyone’s tastes,” the website states. “The much-loved signature Boxcar comes topped with pimento cheese, peach slaw, house pickles, and spicy mayo. It’s possible to swap the fried chicken out for grilled. Customers say it’s easily the best sandwich in town.”

According to Boxcar Betty’s website, the business began with a desire to bring high-end fried chicken sandwiches to Charleston. In South Carolina, besides the Boxcar, the restaurant also sells the Chicken “Not So Waffle” sandwich, which includes bacon jam, maple syrup, pimiento cheese and tomato. It’s other specialty sandwich is the Buffalo chicken sandwich, which includes blue cheese sauce, tomato and Bibb lettuce.
