If you’re looking for the best cheeseburger in Missouri, you’ll find it at a historic Route 66 drive-in, according to Yelp.

Carl’s Drive In recently ranked as the No. 1 place to get a cheeseburger in the Show-Me State.

“Some say sweet dreams are made of cheeseburgers, and we couldn’t agree more,” Yelp said when releasing the 2022 rankings. “Thick and juicy, thin and crispy, slapped between a fluffy moist bun and topped with ooey gooey cheese, there’s nothing like the perfect cheeseburger to get your mouth watering and your tummy rumbling.”

To determine the top cheeseburger in every state, Yelp considered U.S. businesses with lots of reviews mentioning the word “cheeseburger.” The site then used several factors, including “ratings of reviews mentioning ‘cheeseburger’” between Jan. 1 and July 15, to find each state’s best cheeseburger.

Carl’s Drive In

Carl’s Drive In considers itself “a St. Louis institution,” according to its website.

The restaurant, located along historic Route 66 in Brentwood, serves a “crispy-edged, griddle-smashed double cheeseburger” along with other American drive-in staples, including homemade root beer and foot-long hot dogs.

“For six decades, we have kept our history alive through a traditional menu and unique, 16 stool layout,” the drive-in said. “Our simple menu is anything but ordinary.”

What reviewers say

Carl’s Drive In is rated as a four-star restaurant on Yelp with 280 reviews — 54 of which mention the word “cheeseburger.”

“There is something to be said about a cheeseburger hot off the grill and fries right out of the kettle,” a June 2022 reviewer wrote. “Delicious. And the cold rootbeer hits the spot.”

“Best double cheeseburgers in the STL,” said another reviewer. “A Brentwood staple for many years in the past and for many years to come.”

“There just aren’t restaurants like Carl’s anymore,” another person said. “Carls is a combination of excellent food, tradition and the experience ... You MUST order a cheeseburger and large root beer in a frosted mug. Nearly all the staff has been there for decades and it is like a small family.”

Brentwood is about 10 miles west of downtown St. Louis.
