Best Bites: Almost-famous bloomin' onion

You don't have to venture out in the cold for a bite of Outback's famous fried blooming onion recipe! Instead, you can make this ultimate comfort dish in your own kitchen. Deep fried and perfect for group get-togethers, this savory favorite will keep you warm all winter long.

Ingredients

For the dip:

  • 2 tbsp mayo

  • 2 tbsp sour cream

  • 1 1/2 tsp ketchup

  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp horseradish

  • 1/4 tsp paprika

  • Cayenne

  • Salt and pepper

For the onion:

  • 1 large sweet onion

  • 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp cayenne

  • 2 tbsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp thyme

  • 1/2 tsp oregano

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 gallon corn oil

Directions

  1. In a bowl, mix mayo, sour cream and ketchup.

  2. Add in Worcestershire sauce and horseradish.

  3. Sprinkle in salt and pepper.

  4. Add paprika and a dash of cayenne.

  5. Mix, mix, mix!

  6. In a separate bowl, mix flour, paprika and cayenne.

  7. Mix, mix, mix!

  8. Mix thyme and oregano.

  9. Add in cumin and a pinch of pepper.

  10. Mix, mix, mix!

  11. In a separate bowl, mix eggs and milk.

  12. Add in water.

  13. Whisk, whisk, whisk!

  14. Slice off the top of onion.

  15. Slice onion into wedges, but keep it intact.

  16. Combine flour mix and flowered onion in a separate bowl.

  17. Cover bowl and shake.

  18. Remove excess flour.

  19. Coat onion in egg mixture.

  20. Place back into flour mix.

  21. Cover bowl and shake.

  22. Boil in 1 gallon of corn oil.

  23. Deep fry each side for 3 minutes.

  24. Enjoy!
