The new Netflix docuseries, Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street, tells the story of the glorious rise and disastrous fall of infamous financier Bernie Madoff, and the intricacies of the tale are leaving everyone with even more questions than answers.

Madoff was the mastermind behind one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history, which involved the swindling of $65 billion from thousands of clients, before he was caught and arrested in 2008, per History.

Madoff was quickly put on trial, and former clients testified that they lost their life savings because of his schemes. In 2009, he was eventually sentenced to 150 years in federal prison, per The New York Times. However, Madoff only served a small fraction of that sentence.

So, what happened to Bernie Madoff after his prison sentence and how did he die? Here’s everything you need to know:

Where did Bernie Madoff serve his prison time?

He spent most of his sentence at a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, according to USA Today. There, Madoff worked as an orderly in a section of the jail dedicated to educational programs, CNBC reports.

How did Bernie Madoff die?

He died in 2021 while still in prison.

Madoff's official cause of death was end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions, according to the Associated Press. His disease prompted his lawyers to ask the court to release him from prison in 2020 during the pandemic, and one of his lawyers later said it was believed he died from natural causes related to his failing health, per the AP.

How old was Bernie Madoff when he died?

He was 82 when he died, the AP reported.

What happened to the rest of Bernie Madoff's family?

His family was hit with a wave of tragedy in the years after his scheme came to light.

In February of 2022, Madoff's sister, Sondra Wiener, and her husband, Marvin, were found dead in their Boynton Beach, Florida, home in what appeared to be a murder-suicide, the New York Post reported. The couple lost $3 million when Madoff's crimes were discovered, the paper said.

His two sons are also deceased now, as well. Madoff's eldest son, Mark, hung himself in 2010, on the two-year anniversary of his father’s arrest. He was just 46.

Madoff's second son, Andrew, died of mantle-cell lymphoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2014, at the age of 48, the Post reported.

The brothers were the ones who confronted their father in 2008 about concerns related to the company's finances, at which time Madoff admitted to the Ponzi scheme. His sons then alerted the authorities, per Town & Country.

“By all evidence, they felt bitter anger to their father until the days they died,” Andrew Kirtzman, author of Betrayal: The Life and Lies of Bernie Madoff, told the Post. “Andrew blamed his recurring cancer on stress brought on by his father. Mark left a suicide note that blamed Bernie.”
