The series details how Madoff stole roughly $65 billion from thousands of clients before he was finally arrested in 2008, according to History. Many of Madoff’s former clients testified at his trial, claiming they lost their life savings as a result of his Ponzi scheme.
Madoff was sent to jail for 150 years in 2009, according to The New York Times, but he died in 2021 from end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions, the Associated Press reported. When he was sentenced, Madoff stated, "I have left a legacy of shame, as some of my victims have pointed out, to my family and my grandchildren. This was something I will live in for the rest of my life. I'm sorry."
