Netflix’s newest docuseries Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street, dropped today, and the episodes dive into the infamous rise and fall of disgraced Wall Street financier Bernie Madoff, the mastermind behind one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in modern memory.

The series details how Madoff stole roughly $65 billion from thousands of clients before he was finally arrested in 2008, according to History. Many of Madoff’s former clients testified at his trial, claiming they lost their life savings as a result of his Ponzi scheme.

Madoff was sent to jail for 150 years in 2009, according to The New York Times, but he died in 2021 from end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions, the Associated Press reported. But even with Madoff gone, his victims are still reeling from the aftermath of his actions—including some of his own family members.

When he was sentenced, Madoff stated, "I have left a legacy of shame, as some of my victims have pointed out, to my family and my grandchildren. This was something I will live in for the rest of my life. I'm sorry."

Bernie Madoff had two sons: Mark and Andrew Madoff. The brothers confronted their father about their concerns related to the company's finances in 2008, and then alerted the authorities when Madoff admitted to his Ponzi scheme, per Town & Country.

Both of Madoff’s sons are now deceased. Mark, the oldest, hanged himself in 2010 at the age of 46 on the anniversary of his father’s arrest, per The New York Times.

Madoff’s younger son Andrew died of a rare form of cancer called mantle-cell lymphoma in 2014, the New York Post reported. He was just 48.

Madoff’s brother, Peter, was also arrested and sentenced to 10 years in jail for his part in the Ponzi scheme. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to one count of falsifying records and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, per CNBC.

Peter only served nine years of his 10-year sentence at a facility in Miami. He then was sentenced to home confinement in 2019. He was eventually freed in August of 2020 and currently lives in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to the Daily Mail and CNBC.
