Bergen County names new acting chief of detectives after previous chief's retirement

In the wake of Jason Love's retirement, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office named an acting chief of detectives last week.

Matthew Finck, who is a deputy chief with the Prosecutor's Office, will take over chief's duties for detectives.

Finck, 45, began his career in law enforcement as a police dispatcher with Bergen County before moving to the Palisades Park Police Department as the emergency services administrator and communications director. He eventually became a patrol officer with Palisades Park before being promoted to lieutenant.

He was assigned to internal affairs and eventually served as tour commander, later moving to the Prosecutor's Office in 2016 as a task force officer with the technical operations squad. He became a detective and helped with undercover investigations using electronic surveillance.

Finck helped supervise technology upgrades and technical renovations at the Prosecutor's Office in addition to helping get funding for projects.

He has maintained relationships with law enforcement across local, state and federal agencies in the tri-state area and has taught basic recruit classes at the police academy for two decades.

Love, the first Black chief of detectives in the county, retired this month after nearly 30 years working in Bergen.
