Benton’s Christina Gegg tops Week 33 Shreveport Times Athlete of the Week voting
Benton’s Christina Gegg garnered enough votes this week to win the fifth annual Shreveport Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission and Silmon and Cosse Orthodontics.
A standout softball player for the Lady Tigers, Gegg becomes the first Benton softball player to win in the non-football poll for the 2023-24 school year. She joins previous winners that include Benton’s Claire Allen and Brody Hutchison, along with Caddo Magnet’s Elena Pizarro and Calvary’s Jackson Burney and Calvary’s DJ Lynch.
Gegg and her supporters accumulated 1,518 votes, a solid 27.9% of the 5,498 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Gegg to top a field of 19 additional candidates, including Captain Shreve track standout Tyrin Rambo, who finished in second place with and impressive 1,259 votes (22.9%).
Gegg will receive a duffle bag, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s.
A Bossier Parish Community College softball signee, Gegg hit .419 this season for coach Tracey Rambin.
“Christina is such a leader on and off the field,” Rambin said. “She is a hard worker and is an example of Benton tough.”

Others on the 33rd ballot of the school year were Logan Tais, Caddo Magnet tennis; Aleena Duran, Airline softball; Morgan Foster, Ruston softball; Dakota Howard, Parkway softball; Kaydence Chreene, Evangel softball; Kathryn “Kate” Foreman, Byrd softball; Mary McLamb, Caddo Magnet softball; Grace May, Loyola softball; Brayden Toothman, North DeSoto baseball; Tucker McCabe, Northwood baseball; Bryant Lacour, North DeSoto baseball; Judson Funderburk, Calvary baseball; Noah Spears, Doyline baseball; Cason Toms, Benton golf; Ramzee Lewis, North Webster track; Kaylie Dupree, Huntington track; Cortaveus Dorsey, Green Oaks track and Deasia Griffen, North Caddo track.
They were chosen because of their performance the previous week or because their names were submitted by their coach. The Times poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football.
The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
