Callahan, 39, is viewed as one of the top young offensive-minded coaches in the NFL. His name has risen to the top of NFL owners’ lists over the last two years. In five years as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator, Callahan is a big reason Cincinnati’s offense has taken the jump it has.
Though he is the offensive coordinator who is in charge of the protection plan and several key parts of the game plan, Callahan spends the most time with the quarterback position. He’s played a significant role in Joe Burrow’s development since Burrow entered the NFL in 2020.
Callahan was instrumental in designing an offense that helped backup quarterback Jake Browning thrive when Burrow went down with season-ending wrist surgery. Surely the rest of the NFL took note of that. He's also worked directly with current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford when both were in Detroit with the Lions. If any NFL team is looking for a coach to pair with a young quarterback, Callahan would be an ideal choice.
If the Bengals do lose Callahan to a head coaching job, current quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher is the likely target to be promoted to offensive coordinator. Pitcher received an interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator position last year.
