Benedict Cumberbatch's Netflix movie The Power of the Dog is being removed
Benedict Cumberbatch's The Power of the Dog is being removed from Netflix UK next month.
The streaming service's page for the acclaimed 2021 film notes that the last day to watch the film is August 18. It seems this only applies to the UK, as it's not listed on the August removals for Netflix US, for instance.
Normally that's nothing noteworthy since films get removed from streaming services all the time. But this isn't your typical film that gets licensed for a few months at a time — this is a Netflix original movie.

This last happened with His House in the UK, which was taken off Netflix and made available on BBC iPlayer.
Netflix often tags TV shows or movies as an 'Original' (or Netflix Film/Netflix Series) when it signs an exclusivity deal in certain territories and sometimes when it co-produces a project.
For example, Better Call Saul has the Netflix Series tag in the UK, but it was created for AMC, the US network where it first premiered.
For The Power of the Dog, Netflix handled most global distribution, and on its title page in the UK, it bears the branding 'Netflix Film'. BBC Films and the New Zealand Film Commission were among the production companies, but not Netflix.
The good news is that The Power of the Dog isn't disappearing from Netflix UK forever. Digital Spy understands that the film's original distribution deal included a one-year exclusive window for the BBC. After that year is up, the movie will be back on Netflix UK.
Cumberbatch will next be seen in Wes Anderson's Netflix movie The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September before being released on Netflix at an unconfirmed date.
The Power of the Dog can be watched on Netflix UK until August 18 and is available on Blu-ray.
