Benedict Cumberbatch's new movie confirms Netflix release date

Benedict Cumberbatch fans will be able to catch him in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar in a little over a month.

Premiering at Venice Film Festival in early September, Wes Anderson's take on the short story of the same name by Roald Dahl will arrive on Netflix on September 27.

The short movie, closing in at 37 minutes, stars the Doctor Strange protagonist in the titular role. The newly released poster for the film seems to be a nod to Marvel's sorcerer, featuring Cumberbatch in character as Henry Sugar as he meditates with his eyes closed and legs crossed.

The film is inspired by one of the stories contained in Dahl's collection. Sugar is a wealthy man with a penchant for gambling who finds himself disillusioned with the world upon learning of a guru who's capable of seeing without using their eyes.

Determined to master this craft, the protagonist trains himself to see around and through objects and uses his new power for good, winning money at top casinos and using it to help those in need.

Alongside Cumberbatch, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar also features Ben Kingsley (Shang-Chi, Iron Man 3) as Imdad Khan, Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) as Dr Marshall, and Dev Patel (The Green Knight,Slumdog Millionaire) as Dr Chatterjee.

Ralph Fiennes and Rupert Friend also star following their previous collaborations with Anderson, on The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch respectively.

Henry Sugar marks the filmmaker's second adaptation of Dahl after the success of his stop-motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, based on the author's children's book of the same name published in 1970.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023. It's set to stream on Netflix from September 27.
