Ben Stiller has been cast in his first lead movie role in over six years, joining the comedy-drama Nutcrackers.

Deadline first reported Stiller's casting, also confirming that production is currently underway in Ohio.

Nutcrackers is the latest from The Exorcist: Believer director David Gordon Green. The film follows the story of "work-obsessed" Mike (Stiller), who finds his life upended as he travels to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents are killed in a car crash.

However, the three-day trip turns into a much longer stay for Mike, as he realises after weeks of mayhem that "he doesn’t need to find them a home, they've found one for him".

In addition to starring in the film, Stiller is producing it under his Red Hour Films banner. A release date and further casting details are yet to be announced.

Known for his work in 2001's Zoolander and the Night at the Museum films, Stiller most recently popped up in a cameo in the 2022 film Bros. His last lead film roles were in 2017, when he appeared as Matthew Meyerowitz in The Meyerowitz Stories and Brad Sloan in Brad's Status.

Stiller has also been working behind the camera, directing and executive-producing the Apple TV+ series Severance.

The critically acclaimed workplace series is set for a second season, which was delayed due to the WGA strikes.

Meanwhile, Green most recently directed the reboot of the horror franchise The Exorcist, with The Exorcist: Believer being released back in October. He's currently signed on to lead the film's two planned sequels.

Prior to working on The Exorcist, Green collaborated with Danny McBride on a trilogy of Halloween films: Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022).

Nutcrackers is yet to receive a release date.
