The Ben Simmons saga in Philadelphia took another strange turn today.

Simmons, who was suspended for the team’s season opener last night, is reportedly “not mentally ready” to play for the 76ers, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

This report comes after Simmons reported back tightness to Philadelphia staff members, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Simmons received treatment and was cleared to workout.

However, he will now miss tomorrow night’s home opener against the Brooklyn Nets and will remain out for an unspecified amount of time.

The relationship between Simmons and the 76ers is beyond repair; this much seems certain. However, Philly is stuck with him for the time being because they were unable to find a trade partner this offseason–partially due to their own public criticism of Simmons after his postseason struggles last spring.

Simmons is by all indications done with the team. His teammates seem to be done with him, and the organization itself has to be as well at this point.

This has turned into quite a mess, and the only resolution is finding a new home for the onetime No. 1 overall pick.
