Ben Affleck is soon going to be back on our cinema screens as Batman in the multiverse-spanning The Flash movie, but before that he's got another film out titled Air.

The film isn't only Affleck's return to directing after the very successful Argo and the very unsuccessful Live by Night, but it's also a reunion with his frequent collaborator Matt Damon.

Alongside Chris Tucker, Marlon Wayans, Jason Bateman and Viola Davis, among others, the film tells the story of how a deal between Nike and a rookie Michael Jordan was brokered, leading to the Air Jordans shoe brand revolutionising the world of sports endorsements and popular culture as a whole.

Having premiered at SXSW ahead of its theatrical release, the film has (at the time of writing) landed a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that every critic who has reviewed the film so far gave it a positive one.

Across the board, the reviews have named the strong performances of the cast, especially Davis as Michael Jordan's mother Deloris (the athlete himself isn't played by anyone, but he gave his blessing to the film on the condition Davis played his mother), as well as the script by Alex Convery for elevating what could be a dry topic.

Although all the reviews for Air on the site so far are generally positive, there is some range in how well the critics liked it.

IndieWire's reviewer gave the film an A+, describing Air as "a slam dunk and ultimately one of the best sports movies ever made", whilst SlashFilm's 8/10 review called it an "atypical sports drama" and is "not really sure if this is going to make its way into the pantheon of great sports movies".

Air is scheduled to be released in cinemas on April 5.
