Beloved Asian elephant Savannah euthanized at El Paso Zoo

The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is mourning the loss of Savannah, their cherished Asian elephant.

At 71 years old, Savannah battled advanced arthritis and became unresponsive to treatment despite dedicated care from the zoo's medical staff.

Savannah was humanely euthanized due to advanced arthritis and declining quality of life, city officials said.

Dr. Victoria Milne, El Paso Zoo Veterinarian, expressed sorrow over Savannah's passing, highlighting the elephant's active participation in her healthcare for 18 years. Savannah's last months were filled with exercise routines, social interactions, and enrichment activities cherished by zookeepers and visitors.

"The whole veterinary team will miss our regular visits and check-ups with her, and pampering. It is never easy to say goodbye to our long-time residents, but we are out of options to keep her comfortable," Dr. Milne said.

At 71 years old, Savannah's longevity surpassed the average life expectancy of Asian elephants in North America, which is 45 years old.

"Savannah was a gentle giant with a great spirit," remarked El Paso Zoo Director Joe Montisano. "She was a wonderful ambassador for her species and our zoo, and she will be deeply missed."

Originally brought to the U.S. from India at 2 years old, Savannah had resided in various zoos before finding her home at the El Paso Zoo in 1997.
