Belen track fifth at Bolles Classic. Plus baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling and more
The Belen Jesuit boys’ track & field team finished fifth of 30 schools at the Bolles Classic in Jacksonville.
The Wolverines 4x800 meter relay won, clocking 8 minutes and 21.83 seconds with Phil Riobe, Matthew Vina, Michael Brunet and Alec Torricella.
Tiago Socarras won the 800 meters in 1:54.74, followed by teammate Roberto Leon (second in 1:56.30).
Also placing for Belen were Armando Cruz (1600), Vina (800), Joshua Ruiz (3200), Joey Ruiz (3200), and Evan Torres (3200) and the 4x400 meter relay with Socarras, Diego Hamud, Carlos Rodriguez-Novoa and Leon.
Girls’ state wrestling
North Miami was the top South Florida finisher at the FHSAA Girls’ Wrestling State Championships at Silver Spurs Arena at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.
The Pioneers tied for fifth with 57 points. Mater Lakes was eighth at 43 and Key West 11th at 41.5. South Dade tied for 12th with 40, and Stoneman Douglas tied for 18th at 28.
There were 124 schools represented at state.
Boys’ state wrestling
South Dade won its 18th team state title during the FHSAA Boys’ Wrestling State Championships at Silver Spurs Arena at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.
The Buccaneers with 270.5 points dominated to finish first in Class 3A with all 14 wrestlers placing.
Southwest took the runner-up trophy at 139 points. Cypress Bay placed fifth at 74 and Doral Academy ninth at 51. Palmetto was 16th at 36 and Southridge 19th at 29. The field consisted of wrestlers from 80 teams.
In Class 1A, Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines battled defending state champ Jensen Beach to the end. Jensen Beach won the state title with 177.5 points, and Somerset claimed runner-up honors at 170 points.
Mater Lakes Academy was fourth at 125.5 and Cardinal Gibbons sixth at 107. Key West was 15th at 35. Wrestlers from 70 schools qualified for state in 1A.
Baseball
Tied at 2 in the bottom of the 7th, Tyler Duarte drove in the winner (walk-off style) as Southwest baseball edged Krop 3-2.

Palmer Trinity softball improved to 4-0.

Down two sets to one, St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ volleyball rallied, led by Player of the Match Sebastian Nicholson, to defeat Pompano.
