McCranie sets meet record, Aquinas sweeps BCAA

Junior Julianne McCranie of St. Thomas Aquinas helped the Raiders’ girls’ team dethrone Cypress Bay as the defending champion at the BCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Plantation Aquatic Complex.

With McCranie winning the 100-backstroke (57.73) and the 100-butterfly (55.80) for the second consecutive year, it enabled Aquinas to earn the girls team title. McCranie won both events last year as a sophomore.

The Raiders finished with 508 points, while Cypress Bay was second with 451 points.

The Aquinas boys also were winners, dominating with 507 points. Pompano Beach took second at 315 points.

McCranie beat the record in the 100 fly by hundredths of a second, previously set by Cooper City swimmer Katheen Golding in 2015. Aquinas also won the 200 medley relay enroute to the team title.

“Julianne again the 100-back and 100-fly champion setting the BCAA record in the 100-fly and only a tenth back in the 100-back and anchored 4x400 relay at 52.9 which was the fastest split she’s ever had,” said St. Thomas Aquinas coach Alex Wathen. “She’s a very special talent and we are lucky to have her. She’s a team player and that’s a good thing.”

For the second consecutive season, Cypress Bay junior Mariana Cote conquered the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events that helped the Lightning girls place second.

Cote, who is from Venezuela, won the 200 in 1:54.00, 14 seconds better than last season and the best this season to date. She also improved her winning time in the 500 at 5:01.07. She won last year’s race in 5:03.51.

Mason Green of Taravella successfully defended his title in the 100-fly in 50.01, which was better than last year’s winning time of 59.96. He also won the 200-freestyle at 1:42.67, which was the second fastest time in Broward this season. Javier Colmenares of Everglades was a double winner with victories in the 200-yard IM (1:55.29) and the 100-breaststroke (59.76).

Tawannah McLamore of Fort Lauderdale won titles in the 50-free (23.99) and the 100-free (23.04). The Aquinas girls’ 200 medley relay set a meet record at 1:49.01, surpassing the previous mark 1:49.63 set by the Raiders in 2014.
